Where Women Actually Have An Advantage

Every government vacancy in Delhi is open to women. That much is uninteresting and every site says it. The useful question is narrower: where does being a woman measurably improve your chances, and where does it change nothing at all?

There are three places it makes a real difference, and a lot of places it does not.

1. Delhi Police Reserves One In Three Posts For Women

The Government of India approved 33% horizontal reservation for women in direct recruitment to non-gazetted posts from Constable up to Sub-Inspector across all Union Territory police forces, which includes Delhi Police. In the most recent Constable (Executive) cycle that came to 2,496 posts for women out of 7,565.

The word "horizontal" is the part worth understanding, because it changes the maths. Horizontal reservation is carved out within each vertical category rather than sitting beside them. A woman in the OBC category competes for the women's share of OBC seats. A general category woman competes for the women's share of general seats. There is no single pooled women's list.

What this does in practice is create a separate, smaller competition. The closing cut-off for the women's share typically lands below the open cut-off in the same category, sometimes by a wide margin. If you are a woman with a Class 12 certificate and you are under 25, this is the strongest statistical position available to you in Delhi recruitment.

Physical standards are separate and lower. Female candidates need 157 cm height with no chest measurement requirement. The PET events and qualifying times differ from the male standards and are set out in each notification.

2. You Do Not Pay Application Fees

Women are exempt from the application fee across all SSC exams — CHSL, CGL, MTS, Stenographer, GD and Delhi Police Constable — and DSSSB applies the same exemption.

This sounds minor until you think about how the year actually works. A serious candidate applies to eight or ten notifications across a cycle. For a male general-category candidate that is real money, and it quietly pushes people into being selective. You have no reason to be selective. Apply to everything you are eligible for. The cost of an extra attempt is a few hours of form-filling.

3. Some Cadres Reserve Posts By Role

Beyond the police, specific posts are either reserved for or dominated by women through the nature of the role. Female constable and warder posts in Delhi's prisons, matron posts in institutional settings, female security staff, and posts in the Women and Child Development department all fall here. Staff Nurse recruitment through DSSSB is not formally reserved but is overwhelmingly filled by women.

These are usually advertised as separate post codes within a larger notification, so they are easy to miss if you only read the advertisement headline.

Where Being A Woman Changes Nothing

Worth saying plainly, because a lot of pages imply otherwise.

There is no general 33% quota across SSC clerical posts. The reservation is specific to police and paramilitary cadres. CHSL, CGL and Stenographer are open competition with no women's share.

There is no age relaxation for women as a category. Relaxation follows SC, ST, OBC, PwD and ex-servicemen status only. A general category woman faces the same upper age limit as a general category man. Widowed, divorced and judicially separated women do receive age relaxation in certain central recruitments, but that is a separate provision with its own documentation requirements, not a blanket women's concession.

There is no separate qualifying standard in the written exam. Cut-offs differ only where vacancies are separately reserved, which loops back to the police cadre.

Posts Worth Targeting, By Qualification

In-hand figures assume a Delhi posting with DA at 60% and HRA at 30%. Delhi is an X-class city, the top HRA slab, so the same post pays roughly ₹4,000–7,000 a month more here than in a Y-class city.

Teaching Is The Quiet Answer To "Which Job Is Best For Women"

The question gets asked constantly and usually gets answered with whatever pays most. A more honest answer depends on what you are optimising for.

For pay against effort, DSSSB teaching posts are hard to beat. A TGT sits at Pay Level 7, roughly ₹80,000 in hand in Delhi, with fixed hours, school holidays, and postings confined to the NCT with no transfer liability outside Delhi. The qualification barrier is real — graduation plus B.Ed plus CTET — but once cleared, DSSSB runs teaching recruitment at volume and repeatedly.

For speed of entry, Delhi Police Constable, because of the reservation described above.

For ceiling, SSC CGL into a ministry, then departmental promotion.

The ₹2,500 Scheme Is Not A Job

A lot of people searching for government jobs for women in Delhi are actually looking for the Delhi Mahila Samriddhi Yojana, now restructured as the Delhi Lakshmi Yojana, which pays ₹2,500 a month to eligible women.

It is a welfare transfer, not employment. Broad eligibility is BPL or EWS status, age 21 to 59, five years of Delhi residence, and an Aadhaar-linked bank account. Notably, women already in government service are excluded, and so are women receiving benefits under another scheme.

If that is what you came for, the scheme details are on our government schemes page. If you want a job, the vacancies above are the place to start. The two do not overlap — taking a government post makes you ineligible for the transfer.

Applying

  1. Register once at ssc.gov.in for all SSC exams including Delhi Police Constable, and separately at dsssbonline.nic.in for DSSSB posts. Match your name exactly to your Class 10 certificate.
  2. If your name has changed after marriage, carry both the original certificates and the gazette notification or marriage certificate to document verification. Name mismatches are one of the more common rejection causes and are entirely fixable in advance.
  3. Select the fee exemption when applying. It is not applied automatically on every portal.
  4. For police posts, start physical preparation before the notification drops. The gap between notification and PET is usually too short to build from zero.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which government job is best for women in Delhi?

It depends what you are optimising for. For pay against working conditions, DSSSB teaching posts — a TGT is Pay Level 7, roughly ₹80,000 in hand, with no transfer liability outside Delhi. For the best odds of getting in, Delhi Police Constable, because 33% of posts are reserved for women. For the highest ceiling, SSC CGL into a central ministry.

Is there reservation for women in Delhi government jobs?

Yes in the police cadre: 33% horizontal reservation from Constable to Sub-Inspector in Delhi Police, which was 2,496 of 7,565 posts in the last constable cycle. There is no equivalent blanket quota across SSC clerical posts or DSSSB teaching posts.

Do women pay application fees for SSC and DSSSB exams?

No. Women are exempt from the application fee across all SSC exams and DSSSB recruitments. Select the exemption when applying, since it is not always applied automatically.

Do women get age relaxation in government exams?

Not as a category. Age relaxation follows SC, ST, OBC, PwD and ex-servicemen status. Widowed, divorced and judicially separated women receive relaxation in certain central recruitments, but this is a separate provision requiring specific documentation, not a general women's concession.

What is the height requirement for female Delhi Police constables?

157 cm, with no chest measurement requirement. PET events and qualifying times are set separately from the male standards and specified in each notification.

Who is eligible for the ₹2,500 scheme for women in Delhi?

The Delhi Mahila Samriddhi Yojana, now the Delhi Lakshmi Yojana, is a welfare transfer rather than a job. Broad eligibility is BPL or EWS status, age 21 to 59, five years of Delhi residence and an Aadhaar-linked bank account. Women in government service are not eligible.

Are there government jobs in Delhi for women without an exam?

A few genuine routes exist. India Post Gramin Dak Sevak selects purely on Class 10 marks with no written exam or interview. Apprenticeships, walk-in interviews for contractual medical and nursing posts, and sports quota recruitments also skip the written stage. None of them charge a fee to a recruiter. See our jobs without exam in Delhi page for the full list.

Can married women apply for Delhi government jobs?

Yes. Marital status is not an eligibility criterion for any Delhi recruitment. If your name changed after marriage, carry the gazette notification or marriage certificate to document verification along with your original certificates.
