An online application needs scanned documents and a stable connection near the deadline; an offline one needs postal lead time and a Registered Post receipt as proof; a walk-in needs nothing prepared in advance except the originals in your bag and showing up early. Mixing these up — assuming a role is online when it actually needs a posted form — is one of the more avoidable ways candidates miss a deadline.

Application type is also a rough signal for what kind of role it is. Fully online, large-scale recruitment (SSC, IBPS, Railways) is almost always for permanent, pay-matrix posts filled through a formal exam. Walk-ins and apprenticeships, on the other hand, are far more often contractual, fixed-tenure, or training positions — useful to know before you build your expectations around a listing.

A single recruiting organisation can use more than one application type at once — a department might run a fully online exam for its main annual intake while filling a handful of urgent contract vacancies through walk-ins in the same month. Application type is set per notification, not per organisation, so it's worth checking each listing rather than assuming based on who's hiring.

The fee and document requirements also differ meaningfully by type: online applications need scanned photo/signature files in exact specifications and a working payment method; offline applications need a Demand Draft or Postal Order and postal lead time; walk-ins need original documents in hand and nothing prepared digitally at all. Preparing the wrong kind of documentation for the application type is a common, avoidable delay.
