Government Jobs by Age Limit

Every government job notification states an age window — a minimum and a maximum — calculated as on a fixed reference date named in that specific notification, not the day you apply. Missing this distinction is a common mistake: someone born just after the cutoff might assume they're eligible based on their age today, when the notification is actually measuring age as on a date months earlier or later.

The upper limit isn't the same for everyone applying to the same post. Reserved categories get age relaxation on top of the general upper limit — how much depends on the category, and in some cases on whether categories combine (for example, a PWD candidate who is also SC/ST typically gets a larger combined relaxation than either alone). This is why two candidates applying for the identical post can have different effective maximum ages.

Relaxation isn't applied automatically just because you belong to that category — you select your category in the application form, and you're expected to produce the relevant certificate at document verification to back up the claim. A wrong or unsupported category claim can cause problems later in the process even if it didn't block your initial application.

State-level recruitment often sets its own relaxation rules that can differ from central government norms — some states add relaxation for domicile candidates, for instance. Always check the age relaxation section of the specific notification you're applying to rather than assuming a standard rule applies everywhere.
