What A Class 12 Certificate Actually Gets You In Delhi

More than people assume, and less than most websites promise.

The honest position: with 12th pass alone you are competing for clerical posts, data entry roles, uniformed services and stenography. That is a real set of jobs with real salaries — a Delhi Police Constable takes home close to ₹40,000 a month, and an SSC CHSL Data Entry Operator posted in Delhi does better than that. What you cannot access yet is anything in the teaching cadre, the engineering cadre, or Group B and above. Those need a degree or a diploma, and no amount of coaching changes it.

The other thing worth saying early: most pages ranking for this query pad their vacancy counts with jobs that require a graduate degree, an ITI certificate, or a diploma. If a listing says "12th pass" but the notification says "12th pass with three years' diploma in engineering," that is not a 12th pass job. Everything below has been checked against the actual notification.

The Posts Worth Targeting

PostConducted byAge (Gen) Pay LevelIn-hand in Delhi
Delhi Police Constable (Executive)SSC18–25Level 3₹38,000–40,000
LDC / Junior Secretariat Assistant (SSC CHSL)SSC18–27Level 2₹35,000–37,000
Data Entry Operator (SSC CHSL)SSC18–27Level 4₹48,000–50,000
Data Entry Operator Grade ASSC18–27Level 5₹54,000–56,000
Stenographer Grade DSSC18–27Level 4₹48,000–50,000
Stenographer Grade CSSC18–30Level 6₹64,000–67,000
Multi Tasking Staff / HavaldarSSC18–25Level 1₹32,000–34,000
Junior Assistant, DEO and similarDSSSB18–27Level 2–4₹35,000–50,000
Constable GD (CAPF, postings vary)SSC18–23Level 3₹38,000–40,000

In-hand figures assume a Delhi posting, DA at 60% and HRA at 30%. Delhi NCR is an X-class city, which is the top HRA slab, so the same post pays noticeably more here than in a Y or Z city. That gap is roughly ₹4,000–7,000 a month at these pay levels.

A Note On DMRC And Delhi Metro

Delhi Metro comes up constantly in these searches, so to save you time: DMRC's Maintainer posts need an ITI certificate, and Customer Relations Assistant needs a graduate degree. There is very little at DMRC open to 12th pass alone. Any site telling you otherwise is padding a list.

Which Exam To Attempt First

This depends almost entirely on your age, and most candidates get the sequencing wrong.

If you are 22 or older, Delhi Police Constable is the priority. The general category window closes at 25, which is the tightest of any post on this list. SSC CHSL runs to 27 and Stenographer Grade C to 30, so those will still be there. The constable window will not be. Every year people spend two cycles on CHSL, age out of the police window, and then wish they had reversed the order.

If you are 18 or 19, start with CHSL. You have room to attempt everything, and CHSL preparation carries over directly to almost every other SSC exam. Quantitative Aptitude, Reasoning, English and General Awareness are the same four sections across CHSL, MTS, GD and the Delhi Police paper. One preparation, several attempts.

If your typing is already fast, look hard at DEO. Data Entry Operator sits at Pay Level 4 against LDC's Level 2, which is a gap of roughly ₹13,000 a month in Delhi for the same exam and the same eligibility. The only difference is the skill test. People opt for LDC out of caution and leave a lot of money on the table.

The Typing Test Is Where Most People Actually Fail

Candidates spend a year on Reasoning and two weeks on typing, then fail the skill test. It happens constantly and it is entirely preventable.

For LDC and JSA, the requirement is 35 words per minute in English or 30 words per minute in Hindi, measured as key depressions per hour: 10,500 and 9,000 respectively. For Data Entry Operator the bar is 8,000 key depressions per hour on a computer. Stenographer Grade D needs shorthand at 80 words per minute, Grade C needs 100.

The test is qualifying, not merit-bearing, which people misread as "easy". It is not scored into your rank, but failing it removes you entirely regardless of how well you did in the written exam. If you are targeting a clerical post, put twenty minutes a day into typing from the first week of preparation, not the last month.

Physical Standards For Delhi Police

The PET and PST knock out a large number of otherwise qualified candidates, and unlike the written exam, this part rewards early preparation more than intensity.

Male candidates need 170 cm height and an 81 cm chest expanding to 85 cm. Female candidates need 157 cm. Relaxations apply for candidates from hill areas and for certain categories, and the notification specifies them precisely. Height cannot be trained. Chest expansion can, and so can the race, the long jump and the high jump.

If you are within a centimetre of the chest requirement, six months of structured training will usually close it. If you are three centimetres short on height, redirect that effort to CHSL now rather than finding out at the measurement stage.

Government Jobs In Delhi For Women After 12th

This gets asked constantly and answered badly, so here are the actual numbers.

One in three Delhi Police constable posts is reserved for women. The Government of India approved 33% horizontal reservation for women in direct recruitment to non-gazetted posts from Constable to Sub-Inspector across all Union Territory police forces, Delhi included. In the most recent constable cycle that worked out to 2,496 posts for women out of 7,565. See our government jobs for women in Delhi page for the full breakdown.

The word "horizontal" is doing real work in that sentence and most candidates miss it. Horizontal means the 33% is carved out within each vertical category rather than alongside them. In practice this makes the effective cut-off for women substantially lower than the open cut-off in most cycles.

Fee exemption. Women pay no application fee for SSC exams. That covers CHSL, MTS, Stenographer, GD and Delhi Police Constable. DSSSB applies the same exemption.

Upcoming Vacancies And When To Expect Them

SSC publishes an annual exam calendar, usually in the last quarter of the preceding year, and it is the most reliable planning document available to a 12th pass candidate. CHSL, MTS, Stenographer, GD and Delhi Police Constable all appear in it with tentative notification and exam windows. Build your year around that calendar rather than around news articles about expected vacancies.

DSSSB has no fixed schedule. It releases two to four large advertisements a year, each bundling dozens of post codes, and the 12th pass codes are scattered through them rather than grouped. The listings above are filtered to Delhi government jobs and refreshed daily against official notifications.

Age Limits And Relaxation

Relaxation is 3 years for OBC, 5 years for SC and ST, and 10 years for PwD candidates on top of the category relaxation. Age is calculated as on the cut-off date in the notification, not the date you apply and not the date of the exam. Check it in the advertisement every single time, because SSC does not use a consistent cut-off across its exams.

Do You Need A Delhi Domicile Certificate?

For unreserved posts, no. Any Indian citizen meeting the age and qualification criteria can apply for SSC and DSSSB vacancies.

For reservation benefits in DSSSB recruitments it gets more restrictive. DSSSB notifications have generally required SC and ST certificates issued by the Government of NCT of Delhi. SSC exams, including Delhi Police Constable, use central lists instead and do not have this problem.

What To Be Careful About

"12th pass government job without exam" is one of the most searched phrases in this category and one of the most exploited. The narrow exceptions are walk-in interviews for contractual posts, apprenticeships, and sports quota recruitments. All are advertised on official portals and none charge a fee to apply. See our jobs without exam in Delhi page for a full breakdown.

Rules that will keep you out of trouble: no government recruiter charges money for a job, no genuine recruiter calls or messages you offering one, and every real vacancy has a notification PDF on a gov.in or nic.in domain.

How To Apply

  1. Complete the One Time Registration at ssc.gov.in for SSC exams and dsssbonline.nic.in for DSSSB. Match your name and date of birth exactly to your Class 10 certificate.
  2. Keep a scanned photograph and signature in the exact dimensions the notification specifies.
  3. Choose your post preferences carefully in CHSL. The order you list LDC, DEO and Postal Assistant determines what you are allotted.
  4. Pay the fee. Female candidates and SC, ST, PwD and ex-servicemen applicants are exempt from the SSC fee.
  5. Save the submitted application PDF for document verification.

Documents For Verification

  • Class 10 certificate as date of birth proof
  • Class 12 mark sheet and certificate
  • Category certificate in the prescribed format, with a non-creamy-layer certificate for OBC valid on the notification cut-off date
  • Delhi domicile certificate if claiming DSSSB state quota
  • PwD certificate from a notified medical authority where applicable

The most common reason for rejection at this stage is an OBC certificate issued too long before the cut-off. Get it renewed before you apply, not after you clear the exam.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is the best government job in Delhi for 12th pass candidates?

By salary, Data Entry Operator Grade A through SSC CHSL at Pay Level 5, which comes to roughly ₹54,000–56,000 in hand in Delhi. By ease of entry and volume of vacancies, Delhi Police Constable. By long-term growth, Stenographer Grade C at Pay Level 6.

What is the salary of a Delhi Police Constable in 2026?

Pay Level 3, basic pay ₹21,700. With DA at 60%, HRA at 30% for X-class Delhi and transport allowance, gross comes to about ₹43,000 and in-hand to roughly ₹38,000–40,000 after NPS and CGHS deductions.

Can a 12th pass candidate apply for DSSSB?

Yes, for specific post codes such as Junior Assistant and Data Entry Operator. Most DSSSB teaching and technical posts need graduation or a diploma. Check the post code in the advertisement rather than the advertisement as a whole.

What typing speed is needed for SSC CHSL?

35 words per minute in English or 30 in Hindi for LDC and JSA, measured as 10,500 and 9,000 key depressions per hour. Data Entry Operator requires 8,000 key depressions per hour. The test is qualifying, but failing it eliminates you regardless of your written score.

What is the age limit for Delhi Police Constable?

18 to 25 for the general category, with 3 years relaxation for OBC and 5 for SC and ST. This is the tightest age window among the posts open to 12th pass candidates, which is why it usually deserves priority over CHSL if you are past 22.

Is there reservation for women in 12th pass government jobs in Delhi?

Yes, in the police cadre. There is 33% horizontal reservation for women in direct recruitment to non-gazetted posts from Constable to Sub-Inspector in Delhi Police. In the last constable cycle that was 2,496 posts out of 7,565. There is no equivalent blanket quota for SSC clerical posts.

Do 12th pass government jobs in Delhi pay more than in other states?

Yes, for the same pay level. Delhi is classified as an X-class city, so HRA is 30% of basic pay against 20% in Y cities and 10% in Z cities. At these pay levels that is a difference of roughly ₹4,000–7,000 a month.

How do I apply online for 12th pass govt jobs in Delhi?

Register once at ssc.gov.in for all SSC exams including Delhi Police Constable, and separately at dsssbonline.nic.in for DSSSB posts. Both use a One Time Registration reused for every subsequent application — details must match your Class 10 certificate exactly.
