Assam's state government recruitment is led by the Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) and the State Level Recruitment Commission (SLRC), previously known as Assam Direct Recruitment Commission (ADRE). APSC conducts the Combined Competitive Exam (CCE) for posts in the Assam Civil Service (ACS), Assam Police Service (APS), Finance Service, and Audit Service. APSC also recruits for Assam Agriculture Service, Forest Service, and various Group A and B departmental posts. The ACS combined exam is one of the most competitive state-level exams in northeastern India.

The SLRC (Assam) or ADRE manages Grade III and Grade IV government recruitment across all state departments — a massive drive that saw over 30 lakh applications for Grade IV posts in recent recruitment cycles. Assam Police Recruitment Board (APRB) handles Constable GD, Sub-Inspector, and Jail Warder recruitment. The Directorate of Elementary Education and Department of Secondary Education manage teacher recruitment through TET-based drives (Assam TET is mandatory for primary and upper primary teaching posts). Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), headquartered in Maligaon Guwahati, is the largest central government employer in Assam.

Assam government employees receive salary under the Assam Pay Rules 2017 (7th CPC equivalent). The state grants additional benefits for remote area postings in hill districts and river island (char) areas. ST (Plains) and ST (Hills) candidates receive 5-year age relaxation and reservation benefits in state recruitment. Assamese language proficiency is expected for most state posts, though Bodo, Bengali, and other scheduled languages are recognised for specific posts in designated districts.
