About Ladakh Government Jobs 2026
Ladakh became India's newest UT in October 2019 following the reorganisation of Jammu & Kashmir. Recruitment for Group C and D posts is carried out separately by the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Councils for Leh (LAHDC-Leh) and Kargil (LAHDC-Kargil) for their respective districts. The UT Administration in Leh handles direct recruitment for Group A and B posts and coordinates with UPSC (AGMUT cadre) for IAS and IPS officers posted to Ladakh. Ladakh does not have a separate Public Service Commission; UPSC serves this role for the UT. Key recruiting departments include Education, Health, Police, PWD, and Revenue.
Government employment in Ladakh carries significant allowances in addition to standard 7th CPC pay, making it financially attractive. The High Altitude Allowance ranges from ₹1,060/month at altitudes below 9,000 feet up to ₹25,000/month for postings above 15,000 feet (Siachen, DBO). Special Increment for Remote Constituency (SIRC) is additionally payable. Border Area Allowance and Highly Active Field Area Allowance apply to defence-linked civilian posts and paramilitary. The Indian Army's Northern Command (headquartered at Udhampur but extensively active in Ladakh) is the largest employer of civilians and uniformed personnel in the region, recruiting Soldiers GD, Soldier Technical, and civilian defence workers.
Ladakh domicile is required for most LAHDC and UT Administration posts. With a population of approximately 300,000 spread across two districts (Leh and Kargil) and an area of 59,000 sq km, Ladakh has the lowest population density of any district in India. Competitive exams and written tests are conducted in Hindi and sometimes in English. Local applicants from the Leh district tend to be predominantly Buddhist while Kargil district candidates are predominantly Muslim — both groups receive ST of Ladakh status with applicable relaxations.
