About Lakshadweep Government Jobs 2026
Lakshadweep is India's smallest UT by both area and population (approximately 65,000 people across 11 inhabited islands). Government employment is the dominant sector in the island economy, with the Lakshadweep Administration being the primary employer. Recruitment is managed directly by the Lakshadweep Administration for Group C and D posts, while Group A officers are posted from UPSC cadres including DANICS and various central services. The UT has no separate PSC. Key departments include Education, Health, PWD, Agriculture, Fisheries, and Electricity (CIPDEL). Given the very small size of the workforce, vacancies are announced infrequently but are highly sought after by local candidates.
The most attractive feature of Lakshadweep government employment is the Island Special Duty Allowance (ISDA) of 25% of basic pay — the highest ISDA rate among all Indian islands, reflecting the extreme remoteness. Government employees also receive travel concessions for annual mainland visits. The Lakshadweep Administration recruits Primary School Teachers through direct recruitment, and the Education Department runs secondary and higher secondary schools across Kavaratti, Agatti, Minicoy, and Andrott islands. The Health Department recruits Staff Nurses, ANMs, Lab Technicians, and Pharmacists for the main District Hospital in Kavaratti and PHCs on other islands.
Native islanders (locally known as "Scheduled Tribe" of Lakshadweep) receive strong preference in all UT administration recruitment. The population is predominantly Muslim, and the local language is Malayalam with island-specific dialects. Central government jobs through SSC, Indian Navy, and Coast Guard are open to all Indians. The UT administration follows central government pay scales (7th CPC) with the ISDA and other island allowances added. Applications for UT posts are submitted online through the Lakshadweep Administration website at lakshadweep.gov.in.
