Diesel/Electric Loco (DEMU/Diesel) maintenance is handled at loco sheds, wagon shops, and carriage & wagon workshops. RRB Technician (Diesel Mechanic): Level 2 pay (₹19,900 basic). Railway Workshop Trade Apprentice (Diesel Mechanic): 1–2 year apprenticeship under Apprenticeship Act, ₹7,700–₹9,000 stipend, followed by National Apprenticeship Certificate useful for RRB Technician recruitment. Diesel Mechanic ITI holders may also appear for Railway Helper/Fitter posts depending on specific notification — various RRC (Railway Recruitment Cells) notifications specify eligible trades.
ONGC (Oil and Natural Gas Corporation) uses diesel engines extensively at onshore and offshore drilling rigs for rig power generation, mud pumps, draw works. ONGC recruits Diesel Engine Operator / Technician (E0 grade) from ITI Diesel Mechanic.
