Indian Railways is the largest government recruiter of Fitter trade — both through RRB ALP (Railway workshops need fitters for rolling stock) and through RRC (Railway Recruitment Cell) for Level 1 Workshop Staff. Fitter is listed as eligible for RRB ALP — the selection process involves CBT-1, CBT-2 (Part B: Fitter trade-specific questions on fitting, assembly, blueprint reading, tolerances), Computer Based Aptitude Test, and medical. Workshop posts in Carriage & Wagon (C&W) workshops, Loco Works (ICF Chennai, RCF Kapurthala, CLW Chittaranjan) recruit fitters for manufacturing and repair of coaches, wagons, and electric/diesel locomotives. Pay Level 2 (₹19,900 basic).
Ordnance Factories (now DPSUs — Defence Public Sector Undertakings) are major employers of Fitter trade. Companies like Munitions India, Advanced Weapons & Equipment India, Armoured Vehicles Nigam, Yantra India, and India Optel recruit Skilled Tradesman (Fitter) for manufacturing artillery shells, rifles, armoured vehicles, and optical instruments. Selection is through a written test + trade test (practical fitting). Pay: Level 2–3 (₹19,900–₹21,700 basic) with central government allowances. Ordnance factory workers also get production incentive, CSD canteen access, and township accommodation. HAL (Hindustan Aeronautics Limited) similarly recruits Apprentice and Technician (Fitter) for aircraft component manufacturing.
ISRO Technician B (Fitter / Mechanic) is highly sought after for spacecraft integration and launch vehicle assembly work at VSSC (Thiruvananthapuram) and PSLV Integration Facility. DRDO also recruits Fitter trade holders as MTS (Technical) for lab equipment maintenance at various DRDO labs. BHEL workshops at Hardwar, Bhopal, Trichy, Tirunelveli, and Ranipet recruit Apprentices and Technician (Fitter) for power plant equipment manufacturing. ONGC and IOCL recruit Field Operator (Mechanical) from Fitter trade for oil production sites and refineries. All these PSU technician posts come with significantly better pay and benefits than state government or unorganised sector employment.
