Peon / MTS Jobs 2026: Multi-Tasking Staff Recruitment

Multi-Tasking Staff (MTS), which covers what was traditionally called Peon, Office Attendant, and Daftary, is the entry-level non-technical cadre in central government offices, recruited centrally by SSC through the SSC MTS exam — one of the largest-volume SSC exams by vacancy count, covering thousands of posts across ministries, departments, and central PSUs every cycle. General duties include file movement, basic office assistance, and light physical tasks like gate/security duty in some postings.

Eligibility for SSC MTS is Class 10 pass, with a relatively wide age band (18–25 years for most posts, extended to 27 for Havildar posts in CBIC/CBN under the same exam). No specialised skill or typing requirement applies, making MTS one of the most accessible central government entry points by qualification.

Selection follows a single Computer Based Test (General Awareness, Reasoning, Numerical and Mathematical Ability, English), with a Physical Efficiency Test additionally required for Havildar (Preventive Officer support) posts. MTS carries Pay Level 1 of the 7th CPC matrix — the lowest central government pay level — with DA, HRA, and standard central government job security and pension benefits.
