Group D Government Jobs 2026: Peon, Chowkidar, Driver and Support Staff Posts
Group D covers the entry-level support and manual-work cadre of government service: Peon, Chowkidar (watchman), Safai Sewak (sweeper), Sewadar, Driver, Lift Attendant, Mali (gardener), and similar posts in courts, secretariats, and state departments. The central government formally merged Group D into Group C (as Multi-Tasking Staff, MTS) after the 7th Pay Commission, so these posts are now recruited as MTS at the centre, but most state governments (Haryana, Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, and others) still recruit directly under the Group D label through their state Staff Selection Commission or Subordinate Services Selection Board.
Eligibility is Class 10 (Matriculation) pass for the large majority of Group D posts, with some, like Driver, requiring a valid driving licence and minimum years of driving experience instead of an academic threshold. No specific subject combination is required, and there is usually no written-exam-exempt route, unlike India Post GDS.
Selection is via a Common Eligibility Test (CET) or a single-tier written exam covering basic Reasoning, General Knowledge, Mathematics, and Language, followed in some cases by a Physical Efficiency Test and document verification. Pay starts at Level 1 of the 7th CPC matrix (₹18,000/month basic), the entry point of the entire government pay structure, with a defined promotion path to Group C over years of service.
