IBPS PO vs SBI PO 2026: How to Split Prep Between Two Mains 22 Days Apart
Wed, 26 Aug, 2026
SBI PO Mains is 12 September, IBPS PO Mains is 4 October - just 22 days apart. A side-by-side comparison of vacancies, pay, exam pattern, and a week-by-week plan to prep for both without diluting either.
If you sat for both the SBI PO Prelims on 1–2 August and the IBPS PO Prelims on 22–23 August, your calendar right now looks brutal: SBI PO Mains lands 12 September, IBPS PO Mains follows just 22 days later on 4 October. That's not enough time to build either exam's prep from scratch, but it is enough to prep smart, provided you know exactly where the two overlap and where they don't.
Where the Two Drives Stand
Both are big Probationary Officer rounds running in parallel this season, but at very different scales.
| Detail | SBI PO 2026 | IBPS PO 2026 (CRP PO/MT-XVI) |
|---|---|---|
| Vacancies | 1,500 | 7,565 (revised up after UCO Bank added 200 posts) |
| Notification date | 18 June 2026 | 30 June 2026 |
| Prelims | 1–2 August 2026, done | 22–23 August 2026, done |
| Prelims result | Expected late August / early September | Expected mid-to-late September |
| Mains | 12 September 2026 | 4 October 2026 |
| Eligibility | Graduate, 21–30 | Graduate, 20–30 |
The vacancy gap is worth keeping in mind. IBPS PO is filling five times as many seats as SBI PO this cycle, spread across 11 banks instead of one. If you're deciding where your last week of revision goes, that ratio matters.
Same Basic Pay, Different Package
Both land you at the same starting ₹48,480 Junior Management Grade Scale-I basic pay, on the same post-settlement scale. What actually differs is what surrounds it. SBI PO's approximate CTC in a metro posting like Mumbai runs around ₹21.97 lakh a year once HRA, DA, CCA, PF, NPS, and LFC are added in. See our full SBI PO salary breakdown for the details. IBPS PO's in-hand pay typically sits around ₹74,000–76,500 a month, but since it isn't one employer, it's a shared process feeding 11 different banks, so your actual take-home ends up depending more on which bank you land at than SBI's does.
Where the Two Mains Diverge
Prelims was nearly identical for both: 100 marks, 60 minutes, English/Quant/Reasoning, 0.25 negative marking, and qualifying only in both cases. That score doesn't carry into final merit either way. Mains is where the real differences show up.
| Mains component | SBI PO | IBPS PO |
|---|---|---|
| Objective test | 200 marks, 3 hours (Reasoning & Computer, Data Analysis & Interpretation, General/Banking Awareness, English) | 200 marks / 145 questions, 160 minutes (Reasoning & Computer Aptitude, Data Analysis & Interpretation, General/Economy/Banking Awareness, English) |
| Descriptive test | 50 marks, 30 minutes, written English | 25 marks / 2 questions, 30 minutes, Essay and Comprehension |
| Interview | 75 marks; final merit from Objective + Descriptive + Interview | 100 marks; Mains (out of 225) and Interview combined 80:20 |
Two things worth taking from that table. SBI's descriptive paper is worth double IBPS's, 50 marks against 25, so if writing is your weak spot, that's where SBI hurts more. And IBPS weights Mains at 80% of final merit against a 20% interview, which means a strong Mains score buys you more cushion there than it does at SBI, where the interview marks get added in more directly.
Splitting 22 Days Three Ways
Right now through 12 September: full SBI PO focus. Lean into Data Analysis & Interpretation. SBI's DI sets run longer and more calculation-heavy than IBPS's. And get real timed practice on the 50-mark descriptive paper, since it's worth twice what IBPS's version is.
13–20 September: recovery and diagnosis, not new syllabus. Go back over your SBI attempt, then sit one full IBPS-pattern mock to see how the 145-question, 160-minute format catches you off guard, especially the merged "Reasoning & Computer Aptitude" section, since IBPS folds computer knowledge into reasoning instead of testing it separately.
21 September to 4 October: full IBPS PO push. Since Mains carries 80% of final merit there, accuracy under the 160-minute ceiling is where your time earns the most. Keep descriptive practice light. It's only 25 marks. Put the time you save into Banking/Economy Awareness instead, which pulls more proportional weight in IBPS's General Awareness section.
If You Can Only Really Prep for One
The vacancy math leans IBPS PO: 7,565 seats across 11 banks against SBI's 1,500 in a single bank means better odds per attempt, even before factoring in how the applicant pools differ. That said, SBI's brand, single-employer predictability, and higher metro CTC are real reasons people still rank it first when they're forced to pick. If both your prelims results come back strong, don't pick. That's exactly what the plan above is for. If you're genuinely short on time, lean IBPS for the numbers and treat SBI Mains as the dress rehearsal that sharpens your DI and English before the bigger one.
