Frequently Asked Questions

Qualifying service (QS) is the period of regular, approved service counted for pension. Temporary service, training periods, and periods of unauthorised absence do not count. Minimum QS for OPS pension is 10 years.

For gratuity, service is rounded to nearest 6 months — periods of 6+ months count as a full year, less than 6 months is ignored. Minimum 5 years of service is required for gratuity (except on death/disability).

Most Central Government employees retire at 60 years. Some R&D scientists can get extensions up to 62 or 65 years. Defence personnel have varying retirement ages by rank.

Yes. Extraordinary Leave (EOL) without medical certificate does not count as qualifying service unless condoned by competent authority. Medical leave, earned leave, and half-pay leave generally count.
