NET / SET Qualified Government Jobs 2026 — UGC NET & CSIR NET Sarkari Naukri

UGC-NET (National Eligibility Test) conducted by NTA qualifies candidates for two career tracks: JRF (Junior Research Fellowship) for funded PhD research, and Lectureship (LS) for Assistant Professor eligibility in universities and colleges. For JRF, candidates must be below 28 years of age and score in the top percentile — JRF stipend is ₹37,000/month for the first two years, then ₹42,000/month as SRF. Lectureship qualification has no upper age limit — candidates at any age who clear NET/SET can apply for Assistant Professor posts. This qualification is permanent (as per 2021 notification — NET/SET qualifications are now lifetime valid, not 3-yearly).

Central Government universities — University of Delhi, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Jamia Millia Islamia, Aligarh Muslim University, Banaras Hindu University, Hyderabad University, and 45+ other central universities — recruit Assistant Professors through direct advertisement. Selection: shortlisting by NET/SET qualification + subject expertise → interview. Assistant Professor Pay at Academic Level 10 (₹57,700 basic under 7th CPC pay matrix for central government teaching posts, replacing the earlier AGP system). Gross monthly salary approximately ₹1,00,000–₹1,20,000/month in metro for new appointees. NIT Assistant Professor (on contract or regular) similarly requires NET + PhD (or NET alone for some contract posts).

State Government Colleges are the largest employer of NET/SET qualified candidates — every state has hundreds of government-aided degree colleges and autonomous institutions. State Higher Education Departments recruit Assistant Professors (previously called Lecturers) through State PSC or direct recruitment. State SET (MHSET, KSET, APSET, TNSET, WBSET etc.) is an alternative to UGC-NET for state-level teaching eligibility — SET qualifiers are eligible for state government college Assistant Professor posts but not central universities (which require UGC-NET). State government college pay follows state academic pay matrix — similar to central universities with slight variations. Both NET and SET holders can appear for the same state government college posts.
