CPWD (Central Public Works Department) maintains thousands of central government buildings — Parliament, Supreme Court, central secretariat, AIIMS campuses, IIT/NIT campuses, central prisons, airports — requiring regular repainting, waterproofing, and surface finishing. CPWD Painter (Pay Level 1–2, ₹18,000–₹19,900 basic) works on interior/exterior wall painting, wood polish, distemper, enamel paint, anti-corrosive coatings, and waterproofing membranes. ITI Painter General (NCVT, 1-year trade) is the standard qualification. State PWD Painter posts: all state PWD (government buildings, roads rest houses, circuit houses) have Painter cadres recruited through state-level examinations.

Indian Railways Carriage & Wagon Workshops (ICF Chennai, MCF Rae Bareli, RCF Kapurthala, MTP Pune): Painter Artisan for coach body painting — preparation, primer, base coats, colour coats, varnishing, stencilling — required for new coach manufacture and overhauling. Railway Trade Apprentice (Painter): 1–2 year apprenticeship at workshop, ₹7,700–₹9,000 stipend. After NAC: eligible for RRB Skilled Artisan (Painter) recruitment.
