Stenographer Jobs 2026: Government Stenographer Recruitment

Government Stenographer posts (Grade C and Grade D at the central level) are recruited primarily through the SSC Stenographer exam, placing selected candidates in ministries, departments, and attached offices where they take dictation and prepare official correspondence for senior officers. State secretariats and High Courts also recruit their own Stenographers independently — High Court Stenographer posts, in particular, are filled directly by the respective court rather than through SSC.

Eligibility for SSC Stenographer Grade C and D is Class 12 pass; state and High Court Stenographer posts sometimes require a graduate degree depending on the seniority of the post. The defining qualifying requirement across all Stenographer recruitment is shorthand speed — commonly 100 words per minute for Grade C and 80 wpm for Grade D in English or Hindi — tested through a dictation-and-transcription skill test that candidates must clear regardless of written exam performance.

Selection follows a Computer Based Test (General Awareness, Reasoning, English Language) followed by the mandatory Shorthand Skill Test. SSC Stenographer Grade C is a Group B post while Grade D is Group C, both carrying standard central pay scales with DA and HRA, and a promotion path to Private Secretary and Senior Private Secretary through seniority and departmental exams.
