UPSSSC PET 2026: What It Unlocks and How to Prepare

If you're an Uttar Pradesh candidate with a Class 10 pass and you've never heard of PET, here's the short version: you can't apply for most UPSSSC Group C posts — Lekhpal, Junior Assistant, Village Development Officer, Stenographer, X-Ray Technician — without clearing it first. It's not a job by itself. It's the gate every one of those jobs sits behind.

The UPSSSC PET 2026 notification is out, and registration is open right now — it closes 1 September 2026. If you've been putting this off, this is the actual deadline, not a "check back later" situation.

Two things worth flagging before you plan around these: the exam date is genuinely tentative — UPSSSC sets it after registration closes, based on how many candidates apply and how many exam centres they can book. And the score validity — 3 years — is a recent change. It used to be 1 year. If you cleared PET any time from the 2025 cycle onward, that score is still usable; check your result date before assuming you need to sit the exam again.

What PET Actually Is

PET stands for Preliminary Eligibility Test. It doesn't fill any vacancies on its own — no post is called "PET." What it does is generate a score that UPSSSC uses as the first-stage filter for almost every Group C recruitment it runs. Clear PET, and you become eligible to apply when a specific post — say, Lekhpal or Junior Assistant — opens its own separate recruitment. Miss PET, or fail to clear the cutoff, and you're locked out of applying for any of those posts until the next PET cycle.

This is why UPSSSC runs PET as its own standalone exam, months ahead of any specific vacancy announcement: it's building the eligible pool that individual recruitments will draw from.

Registration: What You Actually Need to Do

Before you can fill the PET form, you need a One Time Registration (OTR) number on upsssc.gov.in — applications without a valid OTR aren't accepted. If you registered for a previous UPSSSC exam, your OTR carries over; you don't need a new one.

Fees can be paid online via card, net banking, UPI, or SBI e-Challan. There's no offline application route.

Exam Pattern & Syllabus

PET is a single 2-hour paper: 100 multiple-choice questions, 1 mark each, with 0.25 marks deducted per wrong answer. There's no separate cutoff per section — your overall score is what matters. The syllabus draws from 12 areas, and the first nine are pulled straight from the NCERT curriculum for secondary and senior secondary classes — which means your Class 9–12 textbooks are a legitimate starting point, not just coaching material.

The last three sections — the passage, graph, and table interpretation — are worth paying attention to. They're less about memorized facts and more about reading speed and accuracy under time pressure, and they're exactly the kind of thing that improves fastest with practice, not more studying.

What Jobs PET Actually Unlocks

Once you clear PET, you become eligible to apply for UPSSSC's Group C recruitments as they're announced individually. The most commonly recruited posts drawing from the PET-qualified pool include:

• Lekhpal — village-level revenue officer, one of UP's most-applied-for posts
• Junior Assistant — clerical roles across UP government departments
• Village Development Officer (VDO) — rural development administration
• Stenographer — across various UP departments
• X-Ray Technician and other technical/paramedical Group C posts
• Assistant Accountant and similar finance-adjacent clerical posts

None of these are hiring "through PET" directly — PET only builds the eligible pool. Each post still runs its own separate recruitment, with its own vacancy count, application window, and (for some posts) an additional written or skill test after PET. Mistakes That Cost Candidates a PET Attempt

A few avoidable errors show up every PET cycle, and they're worth checking against before 1 September:

• Leaving OTR until the last few days. OTR itself takes only minutes, but the portal slows down badly in the final 48 hours before any UPSSSC deadline. Get your OTR number done now, separately from the actual PET form.
• Registering again despite an existing valid score. With the new 3-year validity, a chunk of candidates from the 2025 cycle don't need to sit PET again — but the form doesn't stop you from applying anyway. Check your old scorecard's result date before paying the fee twice.
• Selecting the wrong category or documents at the form stage. Category, once submitted, is difficult to correct later, and it affects both your fee and any reservation benefit at the next-stage recruitment.
• Treating this as a low-stakes exam because it "just" unlocks eligibility. For most posts, PET is a gate before a separate main exam decides final selection — but not all. For some recruitments (Junior Engineer among them, in past cycles) UPSSSC has selected directly off the PET score itself, with no separate main exam. Don't assume your PET marks stop mattering the moment you clear the cutoff.

The Score Validity Change That Actually Matters

This is easy to miss but genuinely useful: PET scores used to expire after 1 year, which meant serious aspirants were often re-sitting an exam they'd already cleared just to stay eligible. From the 2025 cycle onward, that validity was extended to 3 years from your result date. If you already have a valid PET score from 2025, you likely don't need to register again this cycle — check your result date first before spending ₹185 on a repeat attempt.

How to Prepare — Realistically

PET rewards breadth over depth. With 12 sections in one 2-hour paper, no single topic carries enough weight to justify weeks of specialization. A workable approach:

• Start with NCERT Class 9–12 for History, Geography, Economy, Polity, and Science — this covers 5 of the 12 sections directly and overlaps heavily with 2 more.
• Drill the interpretation sections separately. Graph and table interpretation aren't knowledge-based — they're speed drills. Practice 10–15 timed sets in the last three weeks before the exam.
• Keep a running current-affairs note covering the 6 months before your exam, with a UP-specific section — state-level current affairs shows up disproportionately often.
• Don't neglect arithmetic. It's Class 10-level, but under 2-hour exam pressure across 100 questions, basic calculation speed is what separates a comfortable clear from a photo finish.
