UPSSSC PET 2026: What It Unlocks and How to Prepare

If you're a Class 10 pass candidate in Uttar Pradesh and PET is a new term to you, here's the short version. You can't apply for most UPSSSC Group C posts (Lekhpal, Junior Assistant, Village Development Officer, Stenographer, X-Ray Technician) without clearing it first. It isn't a job in itself. It's the gate every one of those jobs sits behind.

The UPSSSC PET 2026 notification is out and registration is open right now, closing 1 September 2026. If you've been putting this off, that date is the real deadline, not something to check back on later.

Two things to flag before you plan around this. The exam date is genuinely tentative: UPSSSC sets it after registration closes, once it knows how many candidates applied and how many centres it can book. And that 3-year score validity is a recent change; it used to be just 1 year. If you cleared PET anytime from the 2025 cycle onward, your score is probably still good, so check your result date before assuming you need to sit the exam again.

What PET Is, Really

PET stands for Preliminary Eligibility Test, and no post is actually called "PET"; it doesn't fill any vacancies by itself. What it does is produce a score UPSSSC uses as the first-stage filter for nearly every Group C recruitment it runs. Clear it, and you become eligible to apply whenever a specific post (Lekhpal, say, or Junior Assistant) opens its own separate hiring round. Miss it, or fail the cutoff, and you're shut out of applying for any of those posts until the next PET cycle comes around.

That's why UPSSSC runs PET as its own standalone exam months before any specific vacancy is announced. It's building the pool that individual recruitments will later draw from.

Getting Registered

Before you can even open the PET form, you need a One Time Registration (OTR) number on upsssc.gov.in. Nothing goes through without a valid one. If you've registered for a UPSSSC exam before, that OTR still works; there's no need to create a new one.

Fees go through card, net banking, UPI, or SBI e-Challan. There's no offline route.

Exam Pattern and Syllabus

PET is one 2-hour paper: 100 multiple-choice questions, 1 mark each, 0.25 deducted for a wrong answer. There's no separate sectional cutoff; your overall score is what counts. The syllabus spans 12 areas, and the first nine draw straight from NCERT's secondary and senior-secondary curriculum, meaning your old Class 9–12 textbooks are a genuinely useful starting point, not something you need to buy special coaching material for.

Pay particular attention to the last three: passage, graph, and table interpretation. They're less about what you've memorized and more about reading speed under pressure, which happens to be exactly the kind of skill that improves fastest through practice rather than more studying.

What Clearing PET Gets You

Once you clear it, you're eligible to apply for UPSSSC's Group C recruitments as each one gets announced. The posts that draw most heavily from the PET-qualified pool include:

• Lekhpal. Village-level revenue officer, one of UP's most applied-for posts.
• Junior Assistant. Clerical roles across UP government departments.
• Village Development Officer (VDO). Rural development administration.
• Stenographer. Across various UP departments.
• X-Ray Technician and other technical/paramedical Group C posts.
• Assistant Accountant and similar finance-adjacent clerical posts.

None of these hire "through PET" directly. It only builds the eligible pool. Each post still runs its own separate recruitment, with its own vacancy count, application window, and, for some posts, an additional written or skill test after PET. Keep an eye on UP government job listings for when these open individually.

Mistakes That Cost People a PET Attempt Every Cycle

• Leaving OTR to the last few days. The registration itself takes minutes, but the portal slows to a crawl in the final 48 hours before any UPSSSC deadline. Get your OTR number sorted now, separately from the actual PET form.
• Registering again despite already holding a valid score. With the new 3-year validity, a good chunk of 2025-cycle candidates don't need to sit PET again, but the form won't stop you from applying anyway. Check your old scorecard's result date before paying the fee twice.
• Picking the wrong category or documents at the form stage. Category is hard to correct once submitted, and it affects both your fee and any reservation benefit down the line.
• Treating this as low-stakes because it "just" unlocks eligibility. For most posts, PET is a gate before a separate main exam decides selection, but not always. UPSSSC has, in past cycles, selected directly off the PET score for some recruitments (Junior Engineer among them), with no separate main exam. Don't assume your marks stop mattering the moment you clear the cutoff.

The Score-Validity Change Worth Knowing About

Easy to miss, and useful to know: PET scores used to expire after a year, which meant serious aspirants often ended up re-sitting an exam they'd already cleared, just to stay eligible. From the 2025 cycle onward, that window stretched to 3 years from your result date. If you already have a valid 2025 score, you probably don't need to register again this round. Check your result date before spending ₹185 on a repeat.

Preparing for It, Realistically

PET rewards breadth over depth. With 12 sections crammed into one 2-hour paper, no single topic is worth weeks of specialization. A workable approach:

• Start with NCERT Class 9–12 for History, Geography, Economy, Polity, and Science. That covers 5 of the 12 sections directly and overlaps heavily with 2 more.
• Drill the interpretation sections on their own. Graph and table interpretation aren't knowledge tests, they're speed drills. Run 10–15 timed sets in the final three weeks.
• Keep a running current-affairs note covering the last six months, with a UP-specific section, since state-level current affairs shows up disproportionately often.
• Don't skip arithmetic just because it's "only" Class 10-level. Under two hours and 100 questions, calculation speed is what separates a comfortable clear from a photo finish.
