Government Jobs for Typing and Stenography Certificate Holders in India
SSC Stenographer exam is the primary central government route for stenography certificate holders. SSC Stenographer Grade C (Pay Level 6, ₹35,400 basic) and Grade D (Pay Level 4, ₹25,500 basic) are recruited through a dedicated annual exam — Paper I (General Intelligence/Reasoning, General Awareness, English Language/Comprehension) followed by a Skill Test (Shorthand Skill Test): Grade C: 100 words per minute (WPM) English shorthand or 80 WPM Hindi shorthand; Grade D: 80 WPM English or 65 WPM Hindi. These dictation speed requirements determine who clears the skill test — shorthand practice at prescribed speeds is the critical preparation. Grade C Stenographers are placed in Gazetted offices (Ministries, PSCs) — a unique path to semi-gazetted status through typing/steno skill.
Indian Railways: Stenographer (Non-Gazetted) posts in Railway Headquarters and Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) offices. RRB Stenographer exam: CBT + Skill Test (80 WPM shorthand). Pay Level 4–6. Personal Assistant (PA) posts in government: many central government Ministries have PA cadre where shorthand is required — Group B Non-Gazetted (Pay Level 6, ₹35,400). SSC PA/SA (Postal/Sorting Assistant) is different — typing speed test (35 WPM), not shorthand. High Courts and District Courts: Court Steno / Stenographer posts at Supreme Court of India, High Courts (Delhi HC, Bombay HC, Madras HC), and District Courts — each conducts its own recruitment. Supreme Court Stenographer: Pay Level 6 (₹35,400+), English shorthand 120 WPM required — highly competitive.
Parliament Secretariat: Lok Sabha Secretariat and Rajya Sabha Secretariat recruit Stenographers (Grade C/D) independently — separate high-competition exams. Parliament steno posts are prestigious (Parliament premises, exposure to legislative proceedings). State PSC Secretariat Stenographer: all state secretariats have Stenographer cadre for state government offices — state PSC or state DRB (Direct Recruitment Board) conducts recruitment. Typing Test only (no shorthand): SSC CHSL PA/SA, Railway NTPC Ticket Clerk, Data Entry Operator — typing speed (35 WPM English or 30 WPM Hindi) without shorthand requirement. Typing-only certificate holders can target these posts. Steno + typing together → SSC Steno, Court Steno, Railway Steno, Parliament Steno — the highest-value category.
