UPSC IES (Electronics & Telecommunications Engineering) is the top central government career for ECE graduates — the only engineering service exam where ECE is a primary stream alongside Civil, Mechanical, and Electrical. IES E&T officers are posted in BSNL (as JTO → SDE → DE), DoT (Department of Telecommunications), Wireless Planning & Coordination Wing (WPC), Indian Radio Regulatory Authority, Department of Space, BEL, ECIL, DRDO, MES, and Indian Railways (Signal & Telecom). Entry at Level 10 (₹56,100 basic). The E&T IES stream has approximately 100–200 vacancies per year, making competition intense but the career trajectory excellent — up to Director General of Telecom.

BEL (Bharat Electronics Limited) is the go-to government PSU for ECE engineers. BEL designs and manufactures defence electronics — radar systems, communication equipment, electronic fuzes, EW suites, avionics, night vision devices, and homeland security systems. BEL recruits Engineer Trainees (ET) through GATE (ECE stream) and through direct advertisements at E-I level (CTC approximately ₹7.5–9 lakh/year). ISRO takes ECE/Electronics engineers for satellite communication systems, RF systems, antenna design, and digital signal processing roles. DRDO's DARE (Defence Avionics Research Establishment, Bangalore), SAG, DRDL, and LRDE labs are primary ECE employers in defence R&D.

BSNL JTO (Junior Telecom Officer) is the classic ECE government job. JTO posts are in Telecom switching, transmission, broadband (FTTH/FTTB), mobile networks, and ISP infrastructure management. Pay scale (BSNL IDA): E-2 level approximately ₹32,000 basic under BSNL pay rules. While BSNL has faced financial restructuring, it is undergoing a major revival under the BharatNet and 4G/5G rollout program — with ₹89,047 crore approved by the government. Indian Railways Signal & Telecom Department recruits Senior Section Engineers (SSE/S&T) through UPSC IES for senior roles and JE (Signal) through RRB JE for entry-level — ECE engineers are the preferred stream for Railway Signal & Telecom.
