CPCB (Central Pollution Control Board) under Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change (MoEFCC) is the apex national body for environmental standards and pollution control. CPCB recruits Scientists (Group A, Pay Level 10, ₹56,100 basic) and Environmental Engineers from B.Tech/M.Tech Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering background through UPSC or direct selection. Work: industrial effluent standard setting, ambient air quality monitoring, hazardous waste rules, environmental impact assessment review, compliance verification. SPCBs (State Pollution Control Boards) — one in each state — have the largest volume of Environmental Engineer and Scientist posts at state level: Maharashtra PCB, Tamil Nadu PCB (TNPCB), DPCC (Delhi), Karnataka PCB, UP PCB etc.

MoEFCC (Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change) and its allied bodies recruit from Environmental Engineering: NEERI (National Environmental Engineering Research Institute, CSIR) — one of the largest environmental research institutes in Asia — recruits Research Scientists from Environmental/Chemical Engineering. NMCG (National Mission for Clean Ganga) — manages the Ganga river rejuvenation programme (₹20,000 crore project) — recruits Environment Officers, Project Engineers, and Technical Officers. NRCD (National River Conservation Directorate) recruits for river pollution abatement projects. Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) and Smart Cities Mission: environment engineers for ETP/STP operations, solid waste management, stormwater drainage — Pay Level 6-7.

PSU Environment Officers: All major PSUs (NTPC, ONGC, IOCL, BHEL, SAIL, CIL) have in-house environment departments mandated by Environmental (Protection) Act 1986. NTPC Environment Officer (E2/E3 grade): monitors emissions from power plants (SO2, NOx, PM, mercury), manages ash ponds, EIA for new units, compliance with MoEFCC standards. ONGC Environment Engineer: oil spill response planning, environmental monitoring at offshore rigs, CPCB compliance. These PSU roles often require B.Tech Civil/Chemical + M.Tech Environmental or M.Sc Environmental Science. GATE score (Civil or Chemical) is used for PSU shortlisting — Environmental Engineering as GATE paper does not exist independently; candidates appear for GATE Civil (CE) or GATE Chemical (CH).
