Post Office Jobs 2026: Postal Assistant, Postman and India Post Recruitment
The Department of Posts (India Post), under the Ministry of Communications, recruits Postal Assistant / Sorting Assistant (PA/SA, office-based sorting and counter work), Postman (delivery duty), and Mail Guard through its own dedicated, centralised recruitment exams — separate from the Gramin Dak Sevak (GDS) engagement, which covers rural extra-departmental posts (see the GDS department page).
Eligibility for Postal Assistant / Sorting Assistant is Class 12 pass with basic computer knowledge; Postman and Mail Guard require Class 10 pass, along with, in many circles, the ability to ride a bicycle or two-wheeler for delivery duty. Selection for PA/SA follows a Computer Based Test (Reasoning, English, Mathematics, General Knowledge) with merit purely on written score — no interview. Postman/Mail Guard recruitment follows a similar written-test pattern at the Class-10 level. These are regular, pensionable central government posts (unlike GDS), carrying standard Group C pay scale, DA, HRA, and a defined promotion path to Postal/Sorting Assistant supervisory grades and beyond.
