Gramin Dak Sevak (GDS) is a distinct category of postal engagement under the Department of Posts, covering three posts: Branch Postmaster (BPM, in charge of a rural post office), Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM), and Dak Sevak (delivery and sorting work at departmental post offices). GDS recruitment is run centrally by India Post through its dedicated portal (indiapostgdsonline.gov.in) and covers thousands of vacancies across every postal circle in the country, usually in one or two large recruitment cycles per year.

GDS is unusual among government recruitments in having no written examination at all — selection is purely on a merit list generated from the candidate's Class 10 marks, with no interview either. Eligibility requires a Class 10 pass with Mathematics and English as subjects (or the local/regional language depending on the circle), knowledge of cycling, and, in most circles, a residency requirement in or near the relevant Post Office jurisdiction.

GDS engagement is not a regular government post in the traditional sense — it is an extra-departmental agency engagement carrying a fixed monthly Time-Related Continuity Allowance (TRCA) rather than a Pay Commission salary, and it does not carry the same pension structure as regular postal employees, though GDS staff are eligible to apply for departmental Postal Assistant and Postman posts through an internal quota.
