Fire and Emergency Services in India are administered by state governments through their respective Fire Services departments (sometimes combined with Home Guards and Civil Defence). Common posts include Fireman / Fire Operator (entry-level, hands-on firefighting and rescue duty), Driver-cum-Pump Operator, Leading Fireman, Sub-Officer, Station Fire Officer, and District Fire Officer at the supervisory level.

Eligibility for Fireman / Fire Operator posts is typically Class 10 or 12 pass with minimum height and chest measurement standards similar to police recruitment; Station Fire Officer and above generally require a diploma or degree along with completion of a recognised Sub-Officers' Course at a state or National Fire Service College. Selection is conducted by the state's own fire services recruitment board or, in some states, the same board that handles police constable recruitment.

Selection is heavily weighted toward physical fitness — candidates must clear rigorous Physical Efficiency Tests including timed runs, rope climbing, ladder drills, and weight-carrying events — alongside a written test and medical examination. Fireman posts follow Group C/D state pay scales with hazard allowance for the physically demanding, emergency-response nature of the role; promotion up to Station Officer and District Fire Officer is available through departmental exams and seniority.
