Government Driver posts (also advertised as Staff Car Driver, LDV/HDV Driver, or Driver-cum-Mechanic) are recruited across state Transport department fleets, State Road Transport Corporations, PWD, police departments, hospitals, and central ministries' administrative pools. State Road Transport Corporations (such as GSRTC, MSRTC, UPSRTC, and others) are among the largest recruiters, hiring drivers for public bus services on a large, recurring basis.

Eligibility requires a valid driving licence for the relevant vehicle class — LMV (Light Motor Vehicle) for staff cars, or a Heavy Transport Vehicle / PSV badge for bus and truck driving posts — along with a minimum qualification (often Class 8 or 10 pass) and a specified minimum number of years of driving experience with a clean record. Age limits are typically 18–40 years depending on the recruiting body.

Selection includes a written test (traffic rules, general knowledge) for some recruiters and, universally, a practical driving skill test that candidates must clear regardless of exam performance. Pay follows Group D/C pay scales or the specific transport corporation's wage structure, with DA and standard allowances; transport corporation drivers may also receive duty-linked incentives.
