Constable is the single largest-volume recruitment category in Indian government hiring, spanning state police forces and central paramilitary organisations. State police constable recruitment (General Duty, Armed, and specialist streams like Driver and Telecom) is conducted independently by each state's police recruitment board. At the central level, SSC GD Constable is the primary exam, filling vacancies across CRPF, BSF, CISF, ITBP, SSB, Assam Rifles, and NIA/SSF in a single combined recruitment cycle. Railway Protection Force (RPF) Constable is recruited separately by the RRB.

Eligibility for Constable posts is typically Class 10 or 12 pass, with age limits generally 18–23 years (relaxable for reserved categories). Selection follows a Computer Based Test, Physical Efficiency Test (PET — running, long jump, and similar events), Physical Standard Test (PST — height, chest, and weight measurements that vary by state and category), document verification, and a medical examination. Physical standards are strictly enforced and are the most common reason for otherwise-qualified candidates to be rejected.

Constable pay follows the 7th CPC Level 3 pay matrix (or the equivalent state pay scale), starting around ₹21,700/month basic, with DA, HRA, uniform allowance, and — for paramilitary postings — risk and hardship allowances. Promotion to Head Constable, Assistant Sub-Inspector, and Sub-Inspector is available through seniority and departmental exams.
