East Coast Railway just opened its Act Apprentice window (closes 15 September) alongside recent NFR and NCR notifications - over 10,000 combined posts. Unlike RRB NTPC or Group D, there is no written exam: selection runs purely on your 10th and ITI marks.
East Coast Railway opened its Act Apprentice application window today, 26 August, closing 15 September, for 1,599 posts. It's just the latest in a string of Railway Apprentice notifications this year: Northeast Frontier Railway closed 6,777 posts on 19 August, North Central Railway closed 1,853 on 7 August, and more zones will open their own windows before the year is out. If you're a 10th-pass ITI holder, this is one of the largest and most overlooked hiring channels into Indian Railways. Unlike RRB Group D or NTPC, there's no written exam at all.
First, a Naming Confusion Worth Clearing Up
Railway Apprentice posts are recruited by the Railway Recruitment Cell (RRC) of each railway zone, not the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) that runs NTPC, Group D, and JE exams. They're separate bodies with separate processes, which is why an apprentice notification looks completely different from an RRB one: no CBT, no multi-stage written exam, and a zone-by-zone rolling schedule instead of one national cycle.

These three alone add up to 10,229 posts, and other zones (South Eastern Railway, South Central Railway, North Western Railway, and more) have run or are running their own separate cycles this year. If you missed one zone's window, it's worth checking whether another zone's is still open or about to open; there's generally no restriction on applying to more than one zone.

Selection: No Written Exam, No Interview
This is the part most first-time applicants don't expect. Railway Act Apprentice selection has no written test and no interview. The entire process runs through three steps:
- Merit list. Calculated from the average of your Class 10 percentage and your ITI trade percentage. Whichever zone you apply to, this average is what ranks you against every other applicant for that trade.
- Document verification. Original 10th marksheet, ITI/NCVT certificate, category and domicile certificates checked against what you uploaded.
- Medical examination. Fitness standards set per trade by the zone's railway medical officer.
That means your entire chance of selection is locked in before you even apply, by your 10th and ITI marks. There's no exam-day performance to improve on. What you can still control: applying to every open zone you're eligible for, since each zone runs its own separate merit list, double-checking your trade certificate matches an NCVT/SCVT-recognized trade name exactly as listed in the notification, and getting your documents scan-ready well before you apply so a last-minute upload error doesn't cost you the window.
Why This Gets Overlooked
Compared to RRB NTPC or Group D, Railway Apprentice recruitment gets a fraction of the attention. No CBT to prep for, no mock tests to sell, nothing to "coach" toward. But at 10,000+ combined vacancies across just three recent zone notifications, plus a stipend and railway-recognized apprenticeship experience on your resume, it's a real opportunity for anyone with a 10th pass and ITI trade certificate who'd rather compete on marks already in hand than sit another CBT.
