Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation closed applications for two large recruitment drives on 5 July: 4,599 Driver posts and 4,318 Conductor posts, 8,917 combined. Both are still waiting on a written exam date, listed on the official OJAS portal as "coming soon." If you applied to either, the two posts aren't run the same way once you get past the application form, and that difference should shape how you're spending the waiting period.

Both posts start on the same fixed contract pay, and both convert to a regular appointment on the standard Driver or Conductor pay scale after five years of satisfactory service, so the "contract" label isn't the trap it can be elsewhere; it's a defined path to permanence, not an indefinitely renewed temp role.

The Written Exam Doesn't Decide Everything for Drivers

This is the detail most candidates applying for Driver posts miss: the OMR-based written test, 100 marks in Gujarati (except the English Grammar section), only accounts for 40% of your final score. The remaining 60% comes from a practical driving test, on-road skill evaluation and manoeuvres, not a box-ticking formality. Score well on the written paper and still fumble the driving test, and the math simply doesn't work in your favor. If you've been putting most of your prep time into GK and Gujarati/English revision, this is the moment to rebalance toward actual driving practice, especially manoeuvres you might not do often day-to-day.

Conductor works differently. It's a single-stage OMR written exam, 100 marks in 1 hour, with 0.25 negative marking, and that score alone determines your merit rank; there's no driving component since the post doesn't require one.

A Detail Worth Knowing If It Applies to You

For Conductor specifically, widow candidates (provided they haven't remarried) and recognized sportspersons who've represented at National, International, Inter-University, or All India Sports Standard level get a 5% addition to their OMR score at every stage. That's a meaningful swing in a large-applicant-pool recruitment like this one, so if you qualify under either category, make sure your supporting certificate is in order well before document verification, not scrambled together afterward.

What to Do While You Wait

With no confirmed exam date yet, split your prep by post. If you're going for Driver, treat the practical test as the senior partner in your prep, not an afterthought after the written paper; road rules, vehicle basics, and actual seat time behind the wheel deserve more of your remaining time than another round of GK revision. If you're going for Conductor, the written paper is the entire game, so timed practice under the real 1-hour limit with the 0.25 negative-marking penalty in mind is where your effort should go. Either way, check OJAS directly (ojas.gujarat.gov.in) for the exam date rather than a fixed calendar guess from a secondary source, since GSRTC hasn't committed to one yet.
